Christopher Columbus discovered America from the East. Russian Commodore Vitus Bering discovered Alaska and North West of America in 1741. Many expeditions recreated the boats and the route of Columbus. Russian writer and adventurer Mike Pobor is the first, who repeated the heroic voyage of Bering across dangerous and stormy North Pacific.
This 30 minute, colorful and attractive video is created by high Russian movie makers. In this video you will see a bird's-eye-view of Vladivostok - the biggest port on the Pacific side of Russia. In Soviet time it was a secret navy base, closed to foreigners. You will visit a shipyard, where shipbuilders constructed vessels only from the old Russian drawings without power tools. Together with sailors you will celebrate the birthday of boats.
As Bering's fleet, they were completed from pine, have double ends, a very impressive large square sail and no sailboat keel. The keel-less boats none maneuverable, unstable and dangerous. In ancient times two of three boats crushed and three of four sailors dies at sea. Mostly these tragedies could be prevented, if the vessels would have keels, but at that time keel hadn't been invented yet. It's why our journey is so dangerous and rocky. Two from three of our boats (with red and blue sides) will never be filmed again. "St. Peter" and "St. Gabriel" we lost in a terrible hurricanes in Latin America...
On bon voyage ceremony at the center of Vladivostok came thousands of people, famous Russian Archbishop blessed ships and crews. After 1300 miles boats arrived to Kamchatka - the most exotic place in the world. This fireland has more than 400 volcanoes with 27 of them - active. Together with travelers you will fly over the incredible and high mountains, which at the middle of summer covered by heavy snow. You will visit capital of fairy peninsula - beautiful Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy.
Mike Pobor is a president of the school of travel. You will be in Kamchatka in a day, when he gives the gifts for young students of his school. They made a trip so far and now will fly back to the Vladivostok. Together with this expedition you will pass the most difficult and dangerous region for sailing around the world - Aleutian Islands, will be with us in a bad storm on Kiska Island, near a US cargo ship, which been torpedoed during WW II. In a small bay, during the low tide a crew replaced thin cooper sheets on the bottom of "St. Paul", which been tore off by a heavy storm.
Another, yet political storm, happened at the days in Russia, when been arrested president of the USSR M.Gorbachov, and sailors listened to Moscow radio with a big disappointment. Very friendly and warm meeting we had on the Aleutians: in Dutch Harbour and Kodiak, where still this time Americans carefully keep old Russian churches, cemeteries, and Russian heritage.
